Acoustic Understanding from Recordings of Arctic marine mammals using Artificial Intelligence
Project Overview
Aim of the project is to develop methods for identification and categorisation of cetacean acoustic signals using recent advancements in machine learning (ML) that are driving the generative artificial intelligence (AI) models. These methods will be applied to 1) conservation and management by developing tools for abundance estimation of narwhals Monodon monoceros, ultimately contributing to their sustainable use as a living resource fostering economic opportunities through harvest and wildlife tourism in the Arctic, and to 2) behavioural ecology by exploring the vocal behaviour of bowhead whales Balaena mysticetus, contributing to the fields of animal behaviour and signal entropy.
